We are busy learning away in 3rd grade! We have finished up our review of nouns (common, proper, singular and plural and pronouns) and adjectives (3.11Div) and verbs (3.11Diii). Adverbs will be our focus this week. We will have a grammar test this week to test the knowledge of parts of speech, including nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs (3.11Dv). There will also be a High Frequency word spelling test this week (3.2.A.vii) . These are words each student should be able to decode and spell in context and on its own.
Reading: Our interactive read aloud this week is The Can Man. We will continue work on elements of fiction stories (3.8A,B,C,D,E). Our main focus will be on identifying the theme, or author’s message, in a fiction story. This is found by identifying what the author wants the reader to learn through the character’s actions and words.

academic vocabulary: fiction, genre, plot, setting, characters, theme (author’s message)

Writing: Students will brainstorm ideas about important writing topics, to them. They will focus on writing for an audience, genre or purpose of intention in writing (3.11Bi,3.11v). We will continue to work on spelling known words and using correct conventions of grammar.
